Sumatra Origin Trip 2023

Sumatra Origin Trip

At Java Republic, visiting coffee origin countries is very important to us and is something that we have done since we were founded in 1999. Over the years we have visited countries such as Rwanda, Costa Rica, Colombia and Ethiopia to name but a few. These trips are a fantastic opportunity for our team to experience first-hand the work that takes place on a coffee farm. Not only that, but they are also a great opportunity for us to meet the farmers and everyone involved in the cooperatives, who are some of the most important people in the whole coffee production process, from crop to cup.

This is our second visit to Sumatra and we are travelling with our partner DR Wakefield, who source and supply green coffee from all over the world. We have been purchasing specialty coffee from Sumatra since we were founded back in 1999. The coffee is high grade and very consistent in terms of quality, hence why we still use so much of it over 20 years later. It is one of our strongest links to origin and one we are very proud of. Some of our core blends that use Sumatran beans include Blue Earth, Cactus and Mezzo

Sumatran Coffee

The country of Sumatra is located in the Sunda Islands, and it is the largest producer of Indonesian coffee. In ancient times the country was known as the “Land of Gold”  or the “Island of Gold” due to the gold deposits that could be found in the highlands – the same place that Sumatra’s arabica coffee is grown.

Read our blog from our 2018 Sumatra Origin Trip to find out more about the history and characteristics of Sumatran coffee.

This time around the lucky Java Republic team member who is going to Sumatra is Roisin Walls. One of our Area Sales Managers for the North of Ireland, Roisin has worked with Java Republic for 11 years, therefore is well known by many of our customers across Northern Ireland, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth. She will spend 10 days visiting a number of coffee farms and cooperatives throughout Sumatra. What Roisin is most looking forward to about the trip is “learning more on how coffee is grown, picked and about what factors affect the coffee cherries, such as climate and altitude”.
