World of Coffee – Copenhagen 2024

The coffee community descended into Copenhagen for World of Coffee 2024.

Organised by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), this is the most highly anticipated gathering of the coffee community with over 10,000 attendees visiting the Bella Center across the 3 day event. From the roasting village to cupping sessions and World Coffee Championships, WOC is a celebration of everything the coffee industry has to offer.

Why Copenhagen?

Known for its commitment to sustainability, high quality of life and thriving arts scene, it’s no coincidence that Copenhagen was chosen as the host city. The city’s dedication to excellence and innovation extends to its specialty coffee culture, making it the perfect location for this international gathering.

For the first time, we proudly served our exceptional sidra natural coffee on the World Coffee Championships Brew Bar. This single origin coffee was sourced from Wilder Lazo of El Placer Farm Projects and hand-roasted exclusively in our carbon-neutral roastery in Dublin. Before being packed into our suitcases and brought over to Denmark.

This coffee features tasting notes of tropical fruits, dark chocolate and honey, before finishing with floral tones of blossom and jasmine. Needless to say, it was a big hit at the Brew Bar!

El Placer is located within the stunning landscapes of el Eje Cafetero, all of their coffees are infused with the rich volcanic soils of the area, giving them unparalleled taste and aroma.

Grown at an altitude of 1,900 to 2,050m, Colombia Finca Bella Alejandraía is of the Bourbon Sidra varietal, a rare coffee varietal that is not commonly found, however is known for its high quality. We have launched a limited number of 227g bags on our online store – grab yours here!

Connecting with Coffee People

From traders, suppliers, producers and those we recently met on origin trips. To reuniting with old friends and making new ones!

We reconnected with Jacqueline Turner who we have recently partnered with for our single origin Rwandan coffee.

Jacqueline is a key member of the International Womens Coffee Association (IWCA). She has partnered with over 633 local farmers in the Rulindo district, Rwanda.

Alongside business partner Malcolm Clear, Jacqueline set up ‘A New Beginning’ charity in Rwanda in 2008. A New Beginning helps widows and orphans who were displaced during the genocide in 1994 by setting up schools and a health post which has fully trained staff.

From our recent origin trip to Brazil, we reunited with farm owner and head of the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA), Carmem Lucia Chaves de Brito (known as Ucha). We headed to the Brazil booth to do cupping sessions organised by COCARIVE and SMC, where we saw more familiar faces. We got the chance to cup coffees from the farms Laura and Hugh had visited during their origin trip.

Read more about their journey to the Minas Gerais region in Brazil here, where they got the opportunity to visit 7 farms. Including the farm where we source the specialty beans that go into our popular Mestizo blend.

A full circle moment for the team was when we got to meet Wilder Lazo, the producer behind the special coffee we chose to serve at this year’s Brew Bar.

Our Team’s Experience At World Of Coffee

“One word for the show is relationships. More than ever before it is clear that one of the most important things when it comes to buying coffee, whether direct or through brokers, is relationships.

With events like World of Coffee, you get a greater insight into what is actually happening at origin, the challenges they face, as well as, the interesting projects that are being worked on by various farmers, producers and cooperatives.

Farmers and producers are much more visible at the World of Coffee now. The passion is palpable from the producers and they are representing the future of coffee on such an international stage.”

“Attending World of Coffee Copenhagen was an incredible experience that highlighted the importance of connections in the coffee industry. Reuniting with colleagues from my origin trip in Brazil was a highlight, further strengthening bonds that go beyond solely transactional relationships.

I also got the opportunity to network with new people from across the industry. Each conversation and new connection opening doors to exciting future collaborations and opportunities.

The event was a showcase of the latest products, machinery and trends in the coffee world. One new alternative milk that I hadn’t come across before was pea milk spotted at the DRYK stand!”

– Laura McKitterick, Commercial Marketing Manager

“My first visit to World of Coffee in Copenhagen was amazing. Being surrounded by so many people who love coffee as much as I do was super inspiring. I came back excited to learn more and get better at what I love doing every day.

A highlight of the event to me was connecting with many companies and producers from my home country, Brazil. I had the pleasure of participating in a cupping session featuring Donas do Café coffee, a remarkable female leadership project.

Exploring the latest equipment and meeting numerous roasters was equally fascinating. I enjoyed sampling their coffees and hearing their unique stories.”

“Amid the bustling atmosphere, I had the pleasure of drinking hectoliters of exceptional coffee and reconnecting with friends from various countries. The event was a showcase of innovation, featuring cutting-edge coffee extraction equipment and technical tools designed for roasters and baristas.

Among the many highlights, a standout discovery was the flowers blossom tea. This unique beverage, distinct from cascara, is made from freshly picked coffee blossoms. It offers a subtle and refreshing floral taste.

Our coffee made a proud appearance at the brew bar, allowing us to brew it for many delighted attendees. It was a moment of pride to see so many people appreciating the quality and flavor of our coffee.”

World of Coffee in Copenhagen was not just an exhibition; it was a celebration of coffee, community, connections and innovations. We look forward to next year’s event in Geneva, Switzerland.
