Closing the Loop on Waste

Since Java Republic was founded in 1999, both the coffee industry and the world around us have changed significantly. Yet, throughout that change, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to sourcing exceptional coffee, building meaningful partnerships, and doing business in a way that creates a positive impact on people and the planet.

At Java Republic, we continually challenge ourselves to be honest and transparent about our sustainability journey. Our recently published 2025 Impact Report provides a candid account of our progress; celebrating what we have achieved, acknowledging where there is still work to do, and holding ourselves accountable for continued improvement.

Circular Economy

As part of our ongoing approach to sustainability, we are working to embed circular economy principles across our business. Rather than simply managing the waste we produce, our goal is to reduce it at source and maximise the lifespan of the resources and products we use through reuse, repair, refurbishment and recycling.

As the saying goes, “you’re only as good as the company you keep.” That is why working with the right partners is such an important part of our sustainability strategy. Our partnership with Panda, our waste management partner, has helped us rethink how we manage waste and reduce our environmental impact.

By combining circular economy principles with effective waste management and the right expertise, we are turning our sustainability ambitions into practical, measurable action. The results from our most recent Impact Report demonstrate the progress we have made in 2025:

Our partnership with Panda has strengthened the way we manage and monitor our waste. Through detailed analysis, transparent reporting and ongoing staff training in waste segregation, we have been able to improve our understanding of our waste streams and strengthen environmental compliance across the business.

Our ambition for 2028 is to reduce the total amount of waste generated by 21% per litre/kg of product, accounting for business and product volume growth. Since establishing this target in 2023, we are already more than halfway there, having reduced our waste by 12.35% per litre/kg between 2023 and 2025.

A dedicated online platform, supported by detailed monthly reporting across every waste stream, gives us greater visibility of our performance. This allows us to monitor waste volumes month by month, identify opportunities for improvement and make informed decisions based on reliable data.

WEEE Recycling

Our Service Department works tirelessly to ensure that our customers’ coffee equipment, from coffee machines and boilers to grinders, continues to perform at its best. Maintaining this equipment inevitably involves replacing internal and external components, making responsible disposal an important part of the process.

This is where our partnership with Panda has made a tangible difference. Panda has established a dedicated WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) recycling stream for Java Republic, ensuring that electrical waste is collected and processed through the appropriate channel rather than being sent to general waste.

Sustainability has always been integral to how we operate, and responsible waste management is an important part of that commitment. Our partnership with Panda has given us greater oversight and control of our waste, from segregation at source through to its final destination.

The monthly reporting we receive has significantly improved the visibility of our waste data, while ongoing staff training helps ensure best practice is applied consistently across the business. The dedicated WEEE stream also provides a responsible route for electrical equipment and components when they reach the end of their useful life.

Managing waste across a growing business is never straightforward. Waste streams are varied, volumes can be significant, and requirements evolve alongside the business itself. Having an experienced, hands-on partner has made a real difference in helping us understand our waste, identify opportunities for improvement and manage it more effectively.
